Ksamil or Saranda: Which One to Base Yourself In

Distance: 15 km, 25 minutes by road. Yet they are two different holidays.

Ksamil is postcard sea with little around it; Saranda is a real city with an ordinary sea.

There is no right answer for everyone — there is a right answer for you. Here it is.

The sea: no contest here

Ksamil wins without debate: pale sand, shallow bottom, islands in front, water among the clearest on the Albanian Riviera.

Saranda's waterfront is city pebble beach: fine for a quick dip, but nobody picks Saranda for the swimming. People staying in Saranda who want the good sea come down to Ksamil for the day — i.e. they make the drive that you, sleeping in Ksamil, don't have to.

Services, evenings and atmosphere: Saranda takes this one

Saranda is a city of about 30,000: real supermarkets, ATMs everywhere, pharmacies, a 2 km promenade with dozens of restaurants and bars, and at least some life outside the season.

Ksamil is shut in winter, and even in summer its evenings are seaside restaurants and a few bars, full stop. If after dinner you want a real stroll, 30 venues to choose from or the feel of a living town: Saranda.

Prices: the real difference

  • Accommodation: like-for-like, Saranda costs 20-40% less. A decent sea-view room in Saranda is €50-90; in Ksamil it starts at €80-100.
  • Restaurants: similar on the tourist waterfront; Saranda has more budget options one street back.
  • Beach clubs: Saranda €8-15, Ksamil €10-30.

In short: a week in Ksamil costs noticeably more, and you feel it most in accommodation and beach spending.

Day trips: location and logistics

From Ksamil you are 10-30 minutes from Butrint, the Blue Eye, the islands and the caves of the southern coast — boat tours leave straight from the waterfront (see the islands tour or Pigeon Cave).

From Saranda the Corfu ferries leave from the central port, and buses run to Gjirokaster and the rest of Albania: if your trip is a moving one, Saranda is the transport hub.

For the northern coast (Krorez, Kakome, Pasqyrat's mirror bay) the two bases are nearly equal.

The verdict: who's for which

  • Pick Ksamil if: you are coming for the sea, staying 3-7 days, travelling as a couple or with small kids, and beach plus a few excursions is enough.
  • Pick Saranda if: you are on a tight budget, travelling solo or with friends, want evenings and services, or Albania is one stop on a longer trip.
  • The smart compromise: sleep in Saranda (you save), day-trip to Ksamil for the sea — but accept 25 minutes of road each way and full beach clubs if you arrive late.

And remember: whichever base you choose, the best of this coastline is seen from the water. A day on the Riviera Grand Tour by boat shows you the coast that doesn't exist from land.
